As a kid growing up my family didn't take many vacations. In fact I can only remember a couple of times going on a vacation to visit some family in Tennessee. When my wife and I were married, we wanted to try to make sure that we took some kind of family vacation every year once the kids were old enough to do this. Over the years I can look back and say that we have been able to stay at some nice places for vacation. Picking out nice places though has been a task that can be very difficult as we have always had a shoe string budget to work with for our vacations.
When the kids were very little, we could just get a nice motel room and put three kids in one bed and my wife and I in the other. Doing this brought us all closer together, but there were difficulties to this. Rebekah and Caleb, my oldest and youngest were very restless sleepers. Daniel, my middle child, was always the light sleeper. Even to this day he can't stand to have noise (other than a fan) while he sleeps, much less alone movement around him. Then there were the giggles that come immediately following lights out. Though we didn't always get much sleep on those early family vacations, I greatly enjoyed the quality time we spent in close proximity.
Over time, and with the help of a couple in our church who let us use their timeshare week, we got to start taking vacations at timeshare resorts with multiple bedrooms. Once we stayed in a place so big that the boys had a loft bedroom, Rebekah had a full-size bedroom, and my wife and I enjoyed our king-size master sweet with jacuzzi tub. Over the past 3-4 years, the couple in the church actually gave us their time share. So now we go every summer to a resort located on Daytona beach to relax in the sun.
Having stayed in many different resorts and motels in the Disney area, we have experienced numerous amenities that make staying in these resorts a fantastic experience. There was one resort that had a huge pool area with a couple of big water slides that my kids loved. Another resort had paddle boats on a lake, and their own miniature golf course. The pools were always one of the focal points for my kids and I as we love to swim. My wife always checks out the size and comfort of the bed and whether there is a whirlpool/jacuzzi tub in the room. All of these things over the years help to make our family vacations wonderful.
When the psalmist writes Psalm 71, "In You, O Lord, I put my trust: Let me never be put to shame. . . Be my strong refuge, To which I may resort continually;" (Psalm 71:1,3) I can't help but think that God is the greatest resort of all. In fact, the whole reason for going to the resorts and on vacation with my family over the years has been to recharge and rest. As I came across these verses in my devotional time, I couldn't help but think about the wonders of God. I believe the apostle Paul said something along the lines of . . . "eye has not seen, nor has ear heard, neither has enter into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those that love Him." (paraphase of I Cor 2:9). Of all the great resorts over the years that I have stayed in, I am excited to have booked a place at the last resort I will ever need. My biggest desire now is that everyone I know would be able to get to stay in this amazing resort, after all, Jesus already paid the price. Rooms are filling up and time is limited on this offer, so if you don't have reservations in the last resort you will ever need then make them today.
