Anyone who knows me knows I love my dog. Three years ago a friend in our church had puppies to give away and left their pictures in the lobby of the church. It was love at first sight, I just had to convince my wife. Finally, I cajoled and persuaded her how great it would be to have a puppy again and she agreed. We made all of the arrangements and brought home my dog, Daisy.
If you have ever seen the movie "Marlee and Me," the crazy stuff that Marlee does is exactly Daisy. I can remember watching the movie thinking to myself that someone had been following me around taking notes on how Daisy acts to write that story.
While Daisy has had her share of "adventures" that one day we will look back and laugh about, there is one thing that I love desperately about her. Every morning I get up first in my house and do my morning routine--shower, get dressed, and then go out to the family room to read my Bible. Each and every morning I am greeted with the most excited dog in the whole world.
I love the fact that Daisy never gets tired of seeing me. Every morning my wife opens the door to her pen, and Daisy bolts out to see me as if I had been gone for months. She is desperate to see me. She jumps over the sofa, runs around like a crazy, wild dog until she is convinced to go outside and relieve herself.
This has been going on since we brought her home as an eight week old puppy. Daisy is so excited about seeing me that nothing else matters in the morning. She gets distracted from all of the things that others might think important, just because she wants to lick me and have me pet her. This is a wonderful thing and why I love dogs.
I think God gave me Daisy to remind me of how I should think about Him. So many of us force ourselves to spend time with God, and it is usually at the end of the day if we have time left. Very few times do we approach God with that wild abandon of reckless love that Daisy shows in wanting to renew her relationship with me every morning. It is funny that my dog has to teach me how I should love my heavenly Father.
